Hey there everyone,
Welcome back to "Wine With Me!" Thank you all for your continuous support! Make sure that if you haven't already, subscribe to the blog and be sure to check out "MuaLanna" for the Slay of the Week! Let's get to it then.... As some of you may know I am currently in my second semester of Junior year Nursing school!!! I've almost reached the finished line and I'm getting so anxious. This has been the longest journey, by far! I've had many gains and experienced a few losses, but overall I have learned so much. I decided to share the inside scoop from fellowing nursing students (along with myself) about how to survive nursing school. First of all, if you're considering choosing Nursing as a career path I would say do your research first and make sure that this is exactly what you want to do. Nursing is so much more than just passing medications and looking cute in scrubs... we are the ones that are in contact with the patient for the majority of their time in the hospital. It takes a strong-willed person, who is passionate about helping people to be able to provide good, quality nursing care. After you figure out if Nursing is what you want to do, now it's time to look for an accredited college. (DISCLAIMER: I am not knocking anyone!) First you have to decide whether or not you want to complete a 2-year or a 4-year program. Now, while a 2-year program will allow you to work sooner than a 4-year and you avoid the liberal arts component..... I PERSONALLY would recommend completing the 4-year BSN program, because more and more hospitals are phasing out accepting those with an associates degree. Along with that, I think that you are able to become a more well-rounded nurse having that liberal arts component. So after you've figured all the technicalities out.. It's time to get started with school!!!! So here's my top tips for surviving nursing school.... 1. If I could say anything of value, I would say that "it's important to make friends/study-buddies right from the start!!" You will be with the same group of girls (or guys) for the next four years and there is no way that you can make it through this type of program without the support of fellow students. Of course, having support from family and friends outside of school is important but sometimes when people aren't dealing with the same lifestyle it's hard for them to relate to what you're going through. 2. "Nursing school is a HUGE commitment, and it's important to adjust life as necessary before starting." Life happens when we least expect it, but in the general scheme of things I think it's important to know that you will have to sacrifice ALOT the next 4-years.. be ready to say "no" to going out with your friends on the weekend, or explaining to great-grandma Sue why you can't attend her Sunday brunch. It gets hard sometimes and very frustrating to be away from the ones you love, but in the end I promise it'll all be worth it (at least I'm hoping so) 3. "Get to know your professors VERY WELL!" Utilize office hours, tutoring sessions, study sheets.. EVERYTHING! Professors are more willing to help you and work with you when they see that you're putting in effort, and reaching out to them to clarify areas of confusion. 4. "Study, study, and study... BUT make time for yourself" Nursing is all about being able to critically think and analyze situations both under pressure/not under pressure... YES, however if you do not take time for yourself you will lose your mind. It's important not to neglect the life you had BEFORE nursing school, and to continue to find things that bring you peace. 5. "Find study methods that work for you!" Not everyone can listen to lecture and understand the information right away. Whether it's reading the textbook, watching YouTube videos (Nurse RN is GREAT), rewriting notes, etc. Find what works for you and stick to it. 6. "C's still get degrees... (unless you're trying to become an NP)" Everyone fails their first nursing exam, at least from what I've experienced and heard. Adjusting to NCLEX style questions can be a bit much sometimes, but I can ensure you that it's nothing to beat yourself up about. Passing or failing an exam does not determine what kind of nurse you'll be! You will never have the same strengths/weaknesses as the next person, so what may have came easy for them might not come easy for you; and vise versa. The best thing that you can do for yourself is to study hard, reward yourself, learn from mistakes, and take advantage of EVERY opportunity! There's so much more that I could say about Nursing school, so I think that I'll make it into a mini series! Nursing school Q&A next week?? I think so! Until then, be sure to check out the second half of this entry entitled "Nursing School MUST-HAVES" where I'll be sharing a list of basic things that every nursing student should have. Also, for all of my Nursing school readers fill free to share tips that you might have that have helped you through school! Until next time...
